I read this book in a day. A cute story BUT so many editorial errors. I’m a middle school English teacher and was appalled at all the grammatical typos. Come on, you’re a big time author, work a little harder at the final copy. And close quotation marks! I bought the first three books of this series because I love Newport Beach and Balboa Bay in California, and with all the chaos going on in the country now, I wanted a light summer read. I cannot understand all the five star reviews of this book. It is obviously a first draft and very sloppy at that. All the characters speak with the same voice. All of them, even the Italian older mother, refer to the others as "you guys." There is much telling after the fact and little showing as it happens. The character Joe remarks that the Disneyland fireworks are right on time. Disneyland is twenty miles from the Balboa Peninsula, too far for viewing their fireworks display. I thought perhaps the author was new to writing, but in researching her bio, I find that she is a poet, works in an English department (surely not as a teacher!), writes scholarly pieces. Though she states that she started out in Southern California, she lives in Fargo, as in far away from Newport Beach. Still, researching the town is very easy as there are many online articles and even walk-about video town tours. I am halfway through the first book and I'm afraid that is as far as I will get. A shame, really, because the Balboa Bay in Newport Beach is such a beautiful, lively and fun area. I live sixty miles inland, but I have vacationed there several times and go down for dinner when I can. I hope someone will write the fun-read book it deserves. I am tempted to try it myself.
